It was a clash of armies and eras as the Roman Legions defeated the Macedonian phalanxes that Alexander had once driven to greatness. It was a classic military conflict between the two dominant military systems of the Ancient World. On one side was the Macedonian phalanx, the fighting force that conquered the world under Alexander the Great. On the other was the Roman Legion–the classic mobile heavy infantry unit destined to be the mortar which held the Pax Romana together for hundreds of years. On a fog-shrouded field, the armies met with the fate of the Ancient World hanging in the balance.
